Tagging unread topics.

(6 posts)

  1. Hey guys, this is a public service announcement.

I wrote a plugin for this place that will tag unread topics much like SMF. It's quite possible I've messed up and there could be some teething problems.

Hopefully I'll resolve them before the evening is over, or I'll disable it before going to bed.

  2. Still having some issues here.

The code that is supposed to track together users, topics, and what's been read seems to be working.

Topics with unread posts in them should be shown in bold letters now.

But the code to link to the latest post within a given topic when there is unread stuff in it is broken.

    Still working on that. Sorry.

  4. Disabled this again for a while. Was producing errors for people who weren't logged in. :-/

  5. Finally got home and managed to fix the cause of that error and re-enabled the plugin. The thing should now link you to the next unread post in the topic.

It will mark topics you just posted in as unread, since I like it that way ;) I don't want people to miss out on posts if someone posted while you were writing yours.

  6. OK. So all posts you haven't read since I activated my plugin the first time are now marked as unread. The plugin detects them as "new" to you.

New topics are marked in bold letters. As are topics containing unread posts.

Topics containing unread posts, will further more link directly to the first of the new posts.

There's no feature to mark everything as read/unread as I think that's kind of over-complicating what should be a simple feature for people to keep track of their posts.

As soon as you've re-read (or reopened rather) all the topics you haven't read since I activated the plugin, this thing should start working as normal.

Sorry for the inconvenience of actually beta-testing a new plugin on a live forum, but I didn't really have any choice since noone has made an acceptable plugin for this feature in bbPress yet.
