Moving time

(16 posts)

  1. I'm moving next weekend. Which has the added injury of no internet at home. The internet connection and home phone line has been transferred to the new location.

I moved my guitars last night aswell as my amp, cables, and stands to the new flat. All except the new guitar (my prrrecious), I'm keeping that with me until I go. Also got my recording gear and monitors in case the feeling grips me and I need to record.

This will be interesting, cause there are neighbours in the apartment below us, so I doubt I'll be able to play my electric at "appropriate" levels :/

  2. I was a little concerned about the neighbors here since we moved into a duplex. But the layout is such that we never hear them, and their hours are such that we practically never see them.

In fact...I'm planning on having rehearsal here a couple of days next week to save money!

We won't play at 'concert volume' or anything, but we will use a drum kit and amps. We've gotta learn seven new songs in the next week or so! Time to get to work!

As for your neighbors...maybe it's time you got yourself a POD or something. maybe a little home studio setup with small speakers?

  3. I already have some monitors and an audio interface. Do you recommend the POD as a guitar processor?

^ I'd recommend the POD's speaker and mic simulation stage for closed-line guitar recording, particularly with overdriven sounds.

As to the rest of the POD's capabilities, their higher end gear certainly seems very high quality.
I was considering the POD-XT Live as my next acquisition, but I've really begun to debate the wisdom of that move. Everybody's gone POD just recently, and I think it's led to guitar sounds becoming more homogenised.

Plus there's the old purists debate when it comes to digital gear like the POD, which I won't get into now.

  5. Steelbones: Any experience with Rocktron processors? They seem adequate for Dave Mustaine. Can't get them here though, would have to import.

Henry: Can't say that I've come across Rocktron much. I've used a couple of old Rocktron rack units, which were pretty good but not as flexible as newer gear.

With units like this it's best to decide which arena your going to use them in, ie live or recording.
If you're planning to do some closed line, overdriven guitar recording, you're probably going to need a decent speaker simulator at some point in the signal chain.
If you're planning on mainly live work then flexible switching options are the primary factor.

  7. I'm looking mainly for something for home/recording.

I've tried Guitar Rig 2, but found it SERIOUSLY wanting in the tone department.

Is there some other good software I could use or a cheapo processor?

I'm pretty much not fond of Vox/Korg processors. I've had one and tried a couple.

Zooms are pretty good, but I don't know how well they've been keeping up with current trends. So I'm leaning towards Line Sux.. er Six.

I like Zoom too. My Zoom3030 has all analog dynamic effects, and the tone is very, very pure.

    I just found this:

    http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Effects/product/Palmer/PGA-04+Speaker+Simulator/10/1

You could just add this into your existing signal chain, preferably after the overdrive.

I know it's pricey in comparison to an all round FX processor, so I'll have a look for something a little cheaper.

Fancy getting technical? Then try this:

    Cheapest option I can find.

  10. I've already made a couple of those kits, both from Velleman. They're not bad, but I don't like the tone very much.

  11. The PODs, Zooms, etc are good for home recording and practice, but for tone, they leave a lot to be desired IMO. Still, the very best sounding/feeling amp simulation I've found is the original SansAmp (and damn I wish i still had mine)

The SansAmp sounds great! And it covers a wide range of amp sounds. get one of those, plug THAT into your digital reverb/effects, and you've got something.

Also, if you can find any kind of little pre-amp with a tube in it (at least one where the tube is actually in the circuit-sometimes the tube is just there as a marketing gimmick) you will get nice warm sounds and musical response.

That's the big thing-having the thing respond to the touch like a 'real' amplifier.

  12. I've moved!

Got the internet thing up and working. Been hell, cause I'm sick. And I tell ya it isn't fun moving your stuff when you've got a harsh headache behind your eyes, and a warm and stuffy nose.

I did go last night and hit the gym pretty hard. Went up to my maximum of 2x180kg in deadlift. Was going to try for 185/190 but I felt I wouldn't have made it.

Oh, I bought a guitar humidifier for the new guitar. Planet waves one that hangs off the D and G strings. Icelandic winters get mighty dry, so I figured it was the responsible thing to do. It's now resting in its hardcase with the humidifier.

  13. you couldve gone all the way, dude, and got a humidi-case
though i dont know if you could find em over there

    i guess its humicase, not humidi-case :P

  14. Well the humidifier I got was like 17 bucks :)

I do like that concept though. Some Höfner guitars come with a humidifying case.

  16. Practical aswell.. I'd have to wait a couple of weeks for that humicase if I bought it online. Noone here sells these. ;)
