Getting a new guitar!

(6 posts)

  1. I just paid half down on a '74 handmade Yamaha GC10D classical guitar. I saw it in a music store in Reykjavik over the weekend.

I'm paying around $1000 for it. $500 now, and the rest next month.

It's very well taken care of considering its age and such. Has alot of cool features like a real bone nut, and the rest is your standard classical affair. Cedar top, rosewood sides and back if I remember correctly, and ebony fingerboard. Seemed to have good tuners and such aswell.

Sounds pretty good, probably even better when I get it home, since I've only played it in a store so far, but it played wonderfully.

It's got some scratches and stuff you'd attribute to a played instruments, but no real dings or such. Only blemish is that it's been fitted with a jack, but no piezo yet. I might get some Fishman electronics into it later on, but I'm not really sure about amplified classicals.

I've heard good stuff about Yamaha classicals, including this piece Guitarist magazine did about nylon stringed guitars. Even if it seems weird buying a classical guitar made in Japan, I'm not too hung up on it.

  6. Ok, I got the guitar yesterday. It's a beautiful instrument.

Has alot of tone in it.

My other classical has a broken top, so I guess it doesn't make for a good comparison. It's the first guitar I owned, so I'll never get rid of it. But a comparison between the two reveals that notes I hammer or pulloff on jump out much more clearly from the Yamaha.

Picking a note gives me a nice clear sound with a little shimmer on top. More apparent on the higher notes. The dude who owned it sold it with a Shubb capo that's big enough for the neck, which is just amazing. I haven't played a classical with a capo since I was a kid, and back then I used one of those elastic ones.

The wood is beautiful. I'm not exactly sure what wood is in the back and sides, I'll have to get some pics up later to get some info on that.

Oh! And I bought one of those piezo pickup thingies: Korg AW1 micro tuner. It's really handy, especially with new strings. I feel like it's much more accurate tuning an acoustic with a piezo on the headstock than trying to position the mic properly and tune with that.
