a strange scenario...

  1. I'm wondering..does anyone here think this is a strange scenario?

A singer/songwriter hires a percussionist and guitarist to do a series of casuals around town. Things go along well for a couple of months, everyone seems professional enough, the material is fun to play and challenging enough to keep the musicians interested, and the pay (though not great) is enough to keep the sidemen on board.
The instrumentation is a bit odd, acoustic guitar/vocals, percussion (congas, hand perc), and electric guitar/b vox...but the group sounds good enough for the gigs it's doing.

BUT...eventually, this little project becomes a "band" and according to the bandleader, all sorts of great stuff, blahblah, is gonna happen. The hired players seem to think the next logical step would be to hire a ___(blank A)___ to fill out the sound.

The bandleader, however, has other plans...which involves instead hiring a
___(blank B)__, and then inexplicably NAMING THE BAND for this new member.

Now...what do you suppose goes in (blank A)?

...and what do you think goes in (blank B)?

    Give me your wildest guesses!

This is a TRUE story, so remember..truth IS stranger than fiction!

    Ok here are some guesses.

Blank A, I would surmise, is a bass player. Reason being you've already got a percussionist, so that doesn't leave much room for a drummer.
I did consider an organist, but decided it wouldn't really suit the existing line-up.

    Blank B,.......mmm.......tricky, but here goes.
    Folksy: harmonica or banjo player
    Jazzy: pianist
    Nauseating: accordionist
    Infuriating: DJ or rapper

  7. Brass, or Theramin, or even a DJ/Rapper would honestly be preferred-those are all too good of choices...

The reality is just too bizarre to even guess...actually, it's not bizarre...it's really just STUPID.

how about...the singer/songwriter hires a backup vocalist? yeah, a girl who just stands there 85% of the time, occasionally warbling along or even taking a lead verse...and often playing percussion...badly.

This is my reality, folks. The gig I've been doing has just taken a strange turn and it's not for the better.

The woman has hired her friend Candy to sing backup (which means she gets paid to STAND THERE and sing maybe two words per song....) and to top it all off...she's now calling the band "Candyland"...and as of the most recent gig, Candy stands centerstage!

Of course, it was the first time my wife, Scoz' wife, and some friends came out to see the band...they were all wondering..."What the?"

It's all very weird. This bandleader was super professional and particular about every little thing when I joined two months ago...you know, like what notes not to play, not to be late, not get drunk, etc...

Suddenly, all that stuff has gone out the window-now suddenly it's okay to be 20 minutes late getting started...want to order drinks from the stage? Hey! order TWO for yourself-they're SMALL!! Sing off key? Whatever!

So I don't know what the hell is going on...if this bandleader is on some kind of bender, or what. But this gig looks to be drying up real soon here.

I've seen this kinda crap happen in poxy lil towns, but I just wouldn't expect it in a big city like Austin, especially as Austin has an international rep as a centre of music.

Hate to put it like this but is the band-leader lesbian or bi at all?

If not, maybe she's one of those types who has to sabotage themselves, cos they get frightened of real success.

Either way you have my genuine sympathy. :(

  10. Well, I ain't so worried about it too much except for a couple of things:

Yes, it was a paying gig. So I hate to see that evaporate.

Also, I hate to see this person make such a bizarre change like that.
It might well explain why so many musicians have come and gone through this person's career.

I don't know if it's drug usage/abuse (and I mean that legal stuff)or some kind of schizophrenia or what-seriously it's like that. It's really sad actually. And it's bizarre. I've actually seen something like this happen before-with another singer/songwriter I played for (real briefly-two gigs) who became psychotic (after I quit) and actually quite a nuisance because this person lived a few blocks away.

But yeah, we (me and Scoz) were wondering how this gig would end.
We figured it would be one of US doing something crazy...but...

  11. UPDATE:

Sooo...after a rather unpleasant phone conversation, (which left me feeling like I'd just been fired) and then a couple of terse/bordering on nasty phone messages (to both me and scoz) Suddenly, this woman does a 180 and starts getting REAL nice again on the phone:

"Oh, I haven't heard from you in a few days, are you okay?" kinda stuff...

So, Scoz and I (we are such a team) have discussed this many times in the past couple of days...and we decided today to...go ahead and rehearse once this week and do the last scheduled paying gig this Friday.

As for the 'freebie' next week, we're still unsure.

  14. Well, scoz called her the other day and set up a rehearsal for tonight...but we still haven't heard back from her.

If she doesn't call us for practice tonight, I guess the whole thing has gone down the tubes. No great loss....

I think I understand what's been going on with her career though...she can't keep a band because she's...well...she's..

On the plus side, Scoz' and my soukous group is coming along nicely. Looks like we'll actually be ready to play a gig in mid-November.
