As far as the sound goes. I think 'downward spiral' is probably even cooler, but i think you need primitive hardware to get that sound, it's hard to do now, the technology has gotten too good! A metal band would have a different target than something lighter... Plus, sometimes-my favorite albums have really crummy production...Sabbath's "Master of Reality"is chock-full of fat, oozing guitars...but the drums sound like poop. "Volume 4" suffers a similar fate-only the guitar sounds are wildly inconsistent from song to song (and even during the same song sometimes) Still, these albums are my high water mark for heavy guitar. Black Flag's "Damaged" and The Stooges "Raw Power" are awful sounding records, but they are great records! So, damn...I can't answer this one with just one record. Which do you choose? - Me, I'd probably choose Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde. Not cause it's the most pristine album, but because I like how the recording and production helps convey the songs.
