In terms of choosing an album I'd have to be on the same page as Vardi.. but I wouldn't mind getting a little bit of 1997-ish Liam Howlett sound to it too :-P

Steely Dan - Aja
Elefante - El Que Busca Encuentra

both have great production values, the latter more so.

also Thirteenth Step - APC was damn good

I think 'the fragile' would be my pick. As far as the sound goes. I think 'downward spiral' is probably even cooler, but i think you need primitive hardware to get that sound, it's hard to do now, the technology has gotten too good!

It would depend on the project! A metal band would have a different target than something lighter...

Plus, sometimes-my favorite albums have really crummy production...Sabbath's "Master of Reality"is chock-full of fat, oozing guitars...but the drums sound like poop. "Volume 4" suffers a similar fate-only the guitar sounds are wildly inconsistent from song to song (and even during the same song sometimes)
Still, these albums are my high water mark for heavy guitar.

Black Flag's "Damaged" and The Stooges "Raw Power" are awful sounding records, but they are great records!

So, damn...I can't answer this one with just one record.

For me it would have to be In The Arms Of God by Corrosion Of Conformity.

There's a really broad spectrum of sounds and production styles on that record, and as Henry said about Blonde On Blonde all the songs are conveyed really well.

Lets say you're getting your big break, you're about to go record your music in a professional studio with a great producer, and he wants you to pick just one album to define the production style of what you want to achieve?

Which do you choose?

- Me, I'd probably choose Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde. Not cause it's the most pristine album, but because I like how the recording and production helps convey the songs.
