yeah well. i can relate to that. all of it. in iceland, things are different, cause its so small. you can go to the media if you want. on the other side you tend to play always for the same people. but where are the other people. maybe they are in grafarvogur, going to hagkaup and eating hot dogs. i want to make those people come to gigs. on the upside, when i do gigs these days, its always different people that show up. but not very many. always 5-10. or maybe 30. or something. whatever. its better then being an artist. because artists have to pay for renting the space, and they also have to pay for the wine. then they have to invite people to come. so they spend alot of money. at least musicians get free beer, and some attention from chicks!

Well you know SB, my metal band that I spent six months working on, went belly-up back around April.

I was figuring that these two guys (both in their early 30's, married with children)wouldn't work out because of their family matters. But that's not what made it fall apart.

Turns out, they were using me to make their old guitar player jealous, so he'd come back and be in their band. Once we got the demo recorded...he decided to re-join and i was out. Since then, they've done nothing, and last time I checked, their myspace page hadn't even been opened since April, when this all went down.

Needless to say, I was extremely disapointed, because i was looking forward to playing some heavy guitar. Plus, I had a guy who was interested in putting out a record for us...but he won't do it unless I have a band that can travel. So that project fell flat.

So that put me off, and I started trying to get the soukous/reggae thing back up and running. Several months later, that has stalled due to grown-up stuff. Everyone is roughly the same age, too busy to really be in a band. But this group's drummer and I have landed on our feet doing gigs with singer Natalie Zoe. And those are paying gigs. Whoopee!

The Ramifications thing fell into my lap, and both those guys ages added up are almost as old as me! People think I'm their dad! But them young kids are crazy enough to jump in the van and get going. So here we go.

Depends on the guy I think. Like at my powerlifting gym, there are 30-something guys training the younger guys. And they listen because they realize these guys know what they're talking about and it's worth benefiting from their experience.

So in this light, I think a dude like you, bones, should get much respect out of the kids.

Glad to hear you're doin well BT.

My main problem in the UK is that most people my age and older are too "grown up" to play metal.
So I end up playing with kids who are full of enthusiasm, but have no knowledge of the history of the music they love.

Plus which, people look at a 35yr old kinda funny when he's hangin out with a bunch of kids who're young enough to be his own children.

HT, like anything else in life-the music thing is 95% BS. You just gotta wade through it.

The easy part is playing your instrument, the hard part is getting some momentum going with your act. The people who manage to get this momentum going good (gigs, releases, radio, reviews, tours-i.e. exposure and entry into the collective mind)are the ones we say are "making it" and often they aren't musically fantastic but just more skilled in business and marketing (or ass-kissing, but this is a short term approach, people see through it)

There's a funny phenomenon I've seen a million times: players who resent the people who've worked hard and elevated themselves (even just a little) into the public eye.
Don't waste time with this attitude, instead-try to meet and learn from some of these more 'successful' folks. It could even lead to a gig with them, you never know.

I've been here for over ten years, everybody should know me by now, right? Not even close. There's too many different 'scenes' here (or anywhere)so I've just been slowly infiltrating as many as possible. I still have a long way to go.

Stay positive Honk! I really beleive that if you keep an open mind and positive attitude that you WILL magnetise what your looking for... People will see that your serious and motivated AND THAT'S what will manifest for you.
Musicians CAN be flakey... Generally the ones that are NOT focused and have an "Un-realistic" view... Just keep being yourself! In a perfect world things would happen perfectly ALL the time LOL!!! Things will work out Bro.. Like I said... STAY positive and Focused on YOUR goals.

It's good that you're getting the referals... Although I like the area here in Boulder It's a bit "slower" than what I'm used to.... at least it seems "Slower" than what I'm used to coming from the East Coast... There seemed to be a LOT more going on... A more "Happenin'" music scene than here...
I get the impression that where you're at in Texas sounds very much like a "faster" pace... Like the NY- NJ scene is... I haven't found that much shakin' here in Boulder... I'm sure it will turn around eventually... I've hit some open mics sponsored by the Blues Society in the area but have'nt met anyone looking to do something band-wise yet... I've had a post out in the classifieds there too, but again, no responses yet... AND I'm REALLY wanting to play out some... Definitely somewhat frustrating... It's rough breaking into a NEW scene... I came out here with NO connects whatsoever. It helps when you know folks in the area... But I'm staying positive... I'll just keep pluggin' the mics... I'm bound to find something sooner or later...

So I played my debut with singer/songwriter Natalie Zoe last night. It went pretty good although I didn't think I played as well as the previous night's rehearsal, and my singing stinks. But she didn't fire me, I got paid and fed and beered so in that way it was a success.

A couple of folks who were there were very complimentary of my singing/playing, and they were all people who have seen Natalie play many times, so that's pretty good. One of them is a pretty well-known singer and she said I sang well...but I think she was just being nice.
