Things slowed down there for a couple of weeks, starting to pick up again. This week we had a good crowd of walk-ins, Lyle Lovett played across the street and his show ended around 11...right as we got started. It was a pretty wild night...celebrities and everything! Plus, we picked up a short notice spot at a new club (for us anyhow) and played there last night. And then we play again at another new (for us) place south of town on Thursday night...whew! So my evil plan of having a regular weekly gig is starting to pay off...people are walking in off the street, bands are inviting us onto their bills, people are giving us contacts, and we have a standing offer from a pretty well known guy to produce a demo for us. My buddy Jack L'amant ran into Robert Plant once in an airport bar, and offered Robert a copy of the L'amant CD. Robert accepted, perused the titles on the back, (the album consisted of all covers of classic/obscure R&B tunes)and started getting excited-"Oh-I LOVE this song!" and started SINGING the songs to Jack right there! They had a little 'jam session' in the airport bar, both singing obscure R&B and blues tunes together! ...maybe Jack could get this gig? Whew! What a relief! I don't mind telling you guys that pretty much every time I enter a situation like this, I worry. I don't worry that we'll suck or whatever, it's not stage fright...it's just...worry. Mostly that we won't draw, the bar won't do well, the staff won't like us, in the middle of a song I'll realize that i forgot my pants, whatever. Last night, all that stuff worked out. We played fine, had a good enough crowd so that the bar made money (on a Monday night, that's always a concern) the staff was cool with us, i remembered my pants. The bar 'beered' us plenty, and we got paid enough to cover a few hours worth of rehearsal. We're back next week, my buddy Chad is gonna talk it up on his radio show. It's all good. For this band, it's a whole different kind of a gig-usually, we have 40 minutes to play, no dicking around, etc. On this gig, we have lots of time to fill. So out come the extended guitar solos, echo box freak-outs, strobe light mayhem, etc. We played everything we know, and repeated a handful of tunes, playing three sets total. Now that we know what the bar wants (they want us to play until about 1 AM) we can start fine tuning the program and probably do one short set followed by one long set. Plus, we're serious about ONE NEW ORIGINAL SONG PER WEEK. That, and we hafta learn "Paranoid" so the bartender can sit in on vocals! So, starting in "Rocktober"..it's Black Sabbath tribute on Monday nights! Seriously, having this go well was quite a relief for me. Now, if we can just keep it up to the same level and really build a crowd... No big whoop, I've done this thing before, but it's always kind of...a letdown. You never really play your best in a sterile TV studio- that's for sure. We used to have a thing here called Austin Music Network. It was devoted solely to Austin and Texas artists. A few years ago, it got the axe in some obscure Time/Warner deal, and has since been replaced by the ultra-bland "ME-TV"..which has NOTHING to do with local music and looks and feels very much like...any boring corporate TV station. <a href="http://www.metelevision.com/" rel="nofollow">http://www.metelevision.com/</a> So, today was the first time I did a spot at the 'new' local music TV station. It's located in an old porno movie theater (honest!)that's been completely refurbished into a shiny, yuppie-friendly environment. The old AMN walls were plastered with posters for local bands..the 'new' place has autographed pics of major label stars on it's walls. The 'old' station was very low-tech, but it worked. The 'new' place is super high-tech...so of course when I plugged in my amp, it buzzed like a tattoo gun. Geez. The only reason they even had us is because next week is the kickoff for a new musician's health organization, and they will be showing local artists ALL DAY next Tuesday. Then it's back to major label junk. So we played, it was okay. Probably won't see it, since I don't have cable TV. Now if you'll excuse me...I must be on my way. The soukous thing just got a kick in the ass last weekend when we auditioned a new singer-we've known this guy for a while, he's a West African guy, drummer and dancer (traditional African dance)and when we finally got back in touch with him and tried him out, the whole thing suddenly came together FINALLY. Our gig is to "hold 'em" after Monday Night Football...which is some kind of American sporting event I guess. We start at 10:30...and the gig goes indefinitely-right now, we're booked through October...if it doesn't work out, we can drop it after that if we want. So it's not exactly the spot I was looking for, which was ideally an earlier time slot later in the week...what we got is a late time slot, early in the week. I have NO idea what sort of crowd will be hanging out watching Monday Night Football (guess we'll find out)but it does satisfy one crucial need: a place to rehearse for free/possible pay, once a week. That plus hopefully we can start building a crowd from here. This way we still have the weekends open for travel gigs, and my 'day job' gigs which usually happen earlier in the evening won't collide with the later time slot. So it's a pretty good deal. It would be cool for you guys to get a steady spot, but I don't really think that guy deserves your help, BT. Oh, and it would be awesome if you guys came to Iceland some summer, like for a holiday/tour. We have a very active scene here during the summer for bands doing live gigs in small towns and bigger town-festivals. Basically bands are playing gigs thursday, friday, saturday nights to packed halls out here. Some do better than others, obviously, but I think an American band doing a tour of Iceland would have enough of a novelty to attract some attention. steinn: You have contacts with some people who are arranging bands in that circuit? No big deal, these are the breaks. We're trying to get this thing (Ramifications) going and basically, we're willing to play anywhere, anytime. So we were last on a Monday night, playing with three bands who were pretty new to the whole thing, one group were actually teenagers there with their parents! Of course everyone split before we played - but then about 15 of our friends showed up and paid to get in. of course the 'promoter' backed out on his guarantee to pay us despite our small, paying crowd. Like i was saying, these are the breaks. But what put me off was the fact that this guy really isn't interested in helping any of these bands get off the ground-his modus operandi is to get a batch of new bands who've never really played out anywhere, and cash in on charging their underage friends to get in. He had no interest in developing any of these bands past this one night. And every one of these guys spouts the same mantra "You don't want to over-expose yourself by playing too much" BULLSHIT I say. Almost every one of these booking agents in town will chime in with this, but really, they're wrong. Up to a certain point, a new band cannot play out too much. Once you can expect a certain size crowd...THEN you drop it down to one local gig a month. I was telling this guy that we would like to do a regular weekly spot for a couple of months. Honestly, my reasons for this are not up-front: We're not as concerned with building a crowd-we just want a place to practice for free! So after having this guy 'explain' the music business to me ("I've been playing in this town for FOUR YEARS he tells me, I know all the ins and outs") I couldn't resist, I just hadda tell him...my first gig in Austin was in 1983, at the Continental Club (one of the city's best rooms) I gave him the whole rap- how I've been in the band three weeks and we've already been doing out-of-towners, etc. So then he's kinda dumbfounded. He's been playing around town for four years, and his 'in' to this club is that he actually works there. His band has built up to an early spot on Friday nights (which is good)but he can't get into anywhere else in town (or out of town-it always amazes me when bands are so short-sighted and haven't even tried to get out of town gigs) Now he's asking ME to help him get gigs elsewhere! I just said..."tell your boss we want a weekly spot, Thursday night, in the front room here" So we'll see how this pans out.
