Well, we ain't been fired yet! Things slowed down there for a couple of weeks, starting to pick up again. This week we had a good crowd of walk-ins, Lyle Lovett played across the street and his show ended around 11...right as we got started.
It was a pretty wild night...celebrities and everything!

Plus, we picked up a short notice spot at a new club (for us anyhow) and played there last night.

And then we play again at another new (for us) place south of town on Thursday night...whew!

So my evil plan of having a regular weekly gig is starting to pay off...people are walking in off the street, bands are inviting us onto their bills, people are giving us contacts, and we have a standing offer from a pretty well known guy to produce a demo for us.

Strangely, as this thing (Ramifications) starts to grow legs...some of my other gigs aren't fairing so well...but that's another story/thread.

I love that. The mix was all wrong in the first track however. The singer was way too cranked. Came off badly. Maybe it's just my ears.

Rest sounds great to me. Reminds me of some of my favorite stuff. Kreator, and Thought Industry's Mods carve the pig: Assassins, toads, and God's flesh album.

Punk, metal, psychobilly, and a bit of surf groove. Good job dude.

Couple of other things-that thing at the beginning is a close up shot of one of the t-shirts i printed (hard to tell, but that's what that is)

and also, the very last song on the video, is a song by the guy who the memorial was for. It's an unreleased song, we were the first people to ever play it onstage...and we didn't rehearse it. That is the first time we ever tried to play it. And Todd didn't know the words (of course)

So I went down to Houston last week for a couple of nights worth of rehearsal and a gig on Saturday with Bark Hard. The goal of this trip was to see if we could "play nice" after our last couple of 'reunion' shows which were drunken destructo-fests. So we wanted to stay sober, play as good as we could, and not break anything. This is because we're considering actually being a band again and playing more shows...people keep asking us to do shows, so we figure...

Thursday morning drummer Scott and I drove down to Houston. We had also offered to help our friend "Mama Prince" by doing some work on her house while we were in town. "Mama Prince" is Bark Hard singer Todd Prince's mom. Back in the day, she hosted many a BH rehearsal/party/skate fest in her house (which in those days had a 20 foot half-pipe ramp in the backyard.... She's a real cool lady, so it was nice to see her and helop her out by doing some work she needed.

Rehearsals on Thursday and Friday nights were brief, two hour sessions. We only had a thirty minute slot to play, the show was a benefit/memorial for a guy we knew who died recently, and the schedule was so tight that Johnny (BH rhythm guitarist)was actually gonna be leaving work for 90 minutes on Saturday night to come play the show before going back to work.

So, we played pretty good, stayed mostly sober, and there wasn't much of a crowd.
Meat Puppets were playing across town and that probably ate our lunch pretty bad.
There were maybe 40 or 50 people there when we played (at the ungodly early hour of 9:30)
and maybe by the end of the night there were 100. In a room that holds 500 people...

My sister came out and shot some video, we sound pretty good, there's screw ups in a couple of tunes, oops.

All in all, not our best show, but not our worst either.

I'm STILL stunned by this turn of events. Just crazy, crazy stuff. What are the odds?
The only thing that would've made it weirder is if I'd been playing that lefty Strat!
But ever since Bo Diddley autographed it, it's been retired from stage use.

So, last night towards the end of our gig, a guy comes into the bar and sits down, watching the band. You can always spot a musician in the crowd, and there he was, watching us play, you could tell that inside his head, he was jamming along with us.

Well, we get finished, and he comes up and starts talking to our drummer Scoz. Then he turns to Natalie "hey Natalie, do you remember me? ...from the One Knight?" She's like "Oh my God-Tommy!" and they hug and start talking old times. This isn't unusual, she's been on the Austin scene for a long time, and people are always coming up to her with "do you remember me?" so i don't think much of it. Just another old-timer who used to jam with Stevie and everybody...normal stuff around here.

So about this time, Scoz comes back in with bad news: flat tire, no spare. Natalie's SUV is packed to the gills, we're twenty miles from home...so our new friend Tom comes to the rescue. "Throw your stuff in my truck, let's go!" "Dude, you are a lifesaver!"
"Hey-any friend of Natalie's is a friend of mine!"

One of the things i like about playing with Natalie is that her crowd is very old-school Austin-not like the more recent (last 20 years...ouch) scene, the old hippy types really do help each other out.

So, we're driving home (20 miles out of Tom's way...what a guy!) and he's telling us his life story-he played at the One Knight, a seminal Austin blues club that gave birth to Texas legends like the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Van Wilks, Stevie back before he became SRV, etc...this is cool, but again, not unusual. You meet guys like this a lot around these parts.

We stop to get gas, and standing there...I ask him his last name..."Rovello" Hmmm...whay does that seem so strangely familiar?...hmmm...

two minutes later, we're driving along, and I have to ask...

"did you used to have a band called the Vettes?"

"YES! how did you know that?"

"Because I was your roadie when I was in high school"

No freaking way. This is the guy who pretty much got me started in the rock and roll thing, 30 years ago! My lefty Sonic Blue Strat? I got it from Tom! Most of the blues licks I know? Got 'em from Tom! Most of my understanding about guitars, amps, and how all that stuff works? Tom's fault again.
This guy pretty much made me what I am (whatever THAT is)

So, we hung out at Scoz' house late into the night, drinking whiskey and picking guitars, jamming on old Vettes and Who tunes, me showing Tom licks that i stole by watching him play all those years ago...crazy, crazy stuff.

Whenever I'm telling you guys (or anybody) about the 'older musicians' I learned from as a kid-I'm talking about Tom! And you know what? I'm almost good enough to jam with the guy finally!

Dammit Steelbones-I thought YOU were the lead guitarist!

My buddy Jack L'amant ran into Robert Plant once in an airport bar, and offered Robert a copy of the L'amant CD. Robert accepted, perused the titles on the back, (the album consisted of all covers of classic/obscure R&B tunes)and started getting excited-"Oh-I LOVE this song!" and started SINGING the songs to Jack right there!

They had a little 'jam session' in the airport bar, both singing obscure R&B and blues tunes together!

Led Zeppelin Searches For Unsigned Bands Via Ziddio.

Apparently, Zeppelin wants unsigned bands for their reunion's afterparty, prospective bands need to post vids explaining why they should get a chance on ziddio.com explaining why they should be allowed to play, and those who'll be picked will get a chance to play one Zeppelin cover and one original track for the crowd.

I think both The Ramifications and Tyrefyre should try out. ;-)

So we played the first of our new weekly spots last night at Headhunters, and it went really well. Whew! What a relief! I don't mind telling you guys that pretty much every time I enter a situation like this, I worry. I don't worry that we'll suck or whatever, it's not stage fright...it's just...worry. Mostly that we won't draw, the bar won't do well, the staff won't like us, in the middle of a song I'll realize that i forgot my pants, whatever.

Last night, all that stuff worked out. We played fine, had a good enough crowd so that the bar made money (on a Monday night, that's always a concern) the staff was cool with us, i remembered my pants. The bar 'beered' us plenty, and we got paid enough to cover a few hours worth of rehearsal. We're back next week, my buddy Chad is gonna talk it up on his radio show. It's all good.

For this band, it's a whole different kind of a gig-usually, we have 40 minutes to play, no dicking around, etc. On this gig, we have lots of time to fill. So out come the extended guitar solos, echo box freak-outs, strobe light mayhem, etc. We played everything we know, and repeated a handful of tunes, playing three sets total. Now that we know what the bar wants (they want us to play until about 1 AM) we can start fine tuning the program and probably do one short set followed by one long set. Plus, we're serious about ONE NEW ORIGINAL SONG PER WEEK. That, and we hafta learn "Paranoid" so the bartender can sit in on vocals! So, starting in "Rocktober"..it's Black Sabbath tribute on Monday nights!

Seriously, having this go well was quite a relief for me. Now, if we can just keep it up to the same level and really build a crowd...

Just got back from a video shoot for a TV spot to be aired next week. No big whoop, I've done this thing before, but it's always kind of...a letdown. You never really play your best in a sterile TV studio- that's for sure.

We used to have a thing here called Austin Music Network. It was devoted solely to Austin and Texas artists. A few years ago, it got the axe in some obscure Time/Warner deal, and has since been replaced by the ultra-bland "ME-TV"..which has NOTHING to do with local music and looks and feels very much like...any boring corporate TV station.

http://www.metelevision.com/

So, today was the first time I did a spot at the 'new' local music TV station. It's located in an old porno movie theater (honest!)that's been completely refurbished into a shiny, yuppie-friendly environment. The old AMN walls were plastered with posters for local bands..the 'new' place has autographed pics of major label stars on it's walls. The 'old' station was very low-tech, but it worked. The 'new' place is super high-tech...so of course when I plugged in my amp, it buzzed like a tattoo gun. Geez.

The only reason they even had us is because next week is the kickoff for a new musician's health organization, and they will be showing local artists ALL DAY next Tuesday. Then it's back to major label junk.

So we played, it was okay. Probably won't see it, since I don't have cable TV.

Now if you'll excuse me...I must be on my way. The Ramifications start our weekly spot tonight! Whoopee!! LIVE ROCK AND ROLL!!!

Never had a woman masturbate with a drumstick (spicy or otherwise) at a gig...yet.
But i do recall one night in Little Rock when one of the local, uh...'women of the evening' did display here wares most prominently to us guys while we were onstage.
Cheap thrills.

GG Allin was one of the folks who I've witnessed pooping onstage. He was a helluva guy.

This guy the other day...he was just a lunkhead/mohawk kid who had to poop, and didn't have enough sense to step around the side of the building.

I've pooped onstage many a time, but only in the musical sense.

Yeah, that's pretty fucking sick.

Worst thing I've seen at a gig was at a party in a local nightclub, where there was a free buffet serving chinese-style food.
Anyway there was a local woman (who I know personally, but not in the biblical sense), who decided she wasn't getting enough male attention, so she picked up a chicken drumstick (which was coated with some kind of spicy stuff), hoisted up her skirt and started masturbating with it. I'm talking full penetration here.

Cutting a long story short neither she nor the drumstick got eaten that night.

Well, yesterday's gig was actually pretty cool. We played in the parking lot of a bicycle shop (actually, 'my' bicycle shop from the old neighborhood)and there were a lot of people there. Some cool bands, mostly noise/metal/punk sounds, except for US, that is. Two kegs of beer lasted for almost the whole party.

There is a group called the Black Label Bicycle Club, and they build thes tall bikes and then have jousting matches on them. Crazy. Also, a pinyata full of beer, candy, condoms, etc (which was smashed by a blindfolded guy...on a bicycle)

The KAOS radio people were out there, (it was a benefit for this tiny underground radio station) as well as lots of bicycle people and lots of punk rockers.

So what was it a 'shitty' gig? The singer in one of the other bands ("War Cola")stepped to the side of the 'stage' during their set, dropped his pants, and ...took a dump. Gross. The really sad part is...it wasn't the first time I've witnessed such an event at a punk rock show. Gross...just really...gross.

Well it's been a hectic couple days and the next couple look to be the same....played Monday night...actually, rehearsed and then went and played- both on Monday night.
Tomorrow and Friday we're gonna have marathon rehearsals here at my house, then we play a radio benefit on Saturday ( http://www.kaos959.com/ )and then on Monday night we start our residency at Headhunters.

..so that's where I've been the last couple of days.

Hopefully!

Things are certainly picking up again around here, between The Ramifications, Natalie Zoe, and the still-unnamed soukous band. The soukous thing just got a kick in the ass last weekend when we auditioned a new singer-we've known this guy for a while, he's a West African guy, drummer and dancer (traditional African dance)and when we finally got back in touch with him and tried him out, the whole thing suddenly came together FINALLY.

So that's good-although it doesn't leave me much/any time to do 'my' thing (whatever that is)-I'm just happy to be working a bunch again.
