Well as it happens I already own a 7-string guitar with a lo B string on it, and I drop it down to a lo A sometimes, so there is already a lot of bass in my sound.
That's one of the reasons that I need speakers need that can reproduce bass better. :)

I prefer detuned.

I'd like to try a 6 string bass that is an octave lower than a guitar, with EADGBE tuning. I think that might be interesting.

i like bassy sounds alot, which is strange since i play guitar. i used to play bass in a early teen band once. Anyway, it seems to be more common amongst guitarists to emphasize the mid. Maybe if you like guitar with a lot of bass register, your looking for some kind of guitar/bass hybrid.

Certainly the cab design plays a role, but the smaller diameter speakers you find in high-end bass cabs are certainly designed for bass, heavier magnets, etc.

First time I encountered a bass rig with 8's was in a studio situation, the guy had a nifty bi-amped bass rig, we mic'd the 8's and they sounded real good, but mostly for presence.

I really like the Ampeg 4x10 'mini SVT' cabs a lot, wish I still had mine.

^ The depth of the speaker cone has a big effect on the level of bass, the deeper the bassier. These cones are about average, so the bass isn't emphasised as much.

But you may have a point about the size and shape of the cab.
I have a feeling that the larger 8" loaded cabs are larger because they have resonance chambers built into them.
And speakers can be voiced to emphasise different frequencies, so that may account for some of the bassier cabs.
These column cabs are actually for PA use, and they look like they were designed for vocals, or to be used in conjunction with woofers, so the low-end just isn't strong enough.

I wonder if it's the size of the cabinet that causes the lack of low-end.

Reason I ask is cause I've seen alot of high end bass cabinets that are loaded with 8"s. And most of those use bigger cabinets than that.

Picked up the amp today and it's everything you'd expect from a vintage valve amp.
One of the things that's really hard to believe is just how clear the sound is.
I'm hearing nuances to my sound that I just wasn't aware of before, and my Vox is a damn good amp, but the Carlsbro is pure class.

However, as good as the speaker cabs are, they're still only loaded with 8" speakers and the low end just isn't enough for my taste.
But once I get this baby hooked up to my Carlsbro 2x12 cab (which has more grunt than an over-crowded pigsty), I've got no doubts about how much thunder I'll be able to generate.

^ Mmmm.......personally I try not to get water anywhere near my electric gear if I can possibly help it. Moisture can linger.
After you've had one valve amp go up in flames cos of a bad short-out you try to never let it happen again.

I intend to make a system for both pics and mp3s. So you can store stuff and connect it to posts.

By the way, you need to put commas between tags to separate them, otherwise you'll end up with one big one. You can edit tags after you post.

That might not sound that great so I'll explain.

4x12AX7s, 2xEL34s, a circuit board that was probably ripped off from Marshall back in the good old days when nobody payed any attention to patents, and 8xCelestions.
